Designing the tunnel ventilation system for the world’s most complex road tunnel; the Rozelle Interchange

£65.00

Description

The Rozelle Interchange is arguably one of the most complex road tunnels ever constructed. It consists of 24 km of interconnected tunnels providing an interchange with six other roads, three of which are also underground. It forms part of the 33 km underground WestConnex Motorway in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia and was opened to motorists in November 2023. The detailed design of the tunnel ventilation system posed unique challenges due to the complexity of the project, strict environmental impact requirements and interfaces with existing underground motorways. This paper provides an overview of the design for this unique and interesting project. It will also explore the innovative digital engineering design process that was adopted to produce an efficient design that could be understood by stakeholders, constructed, commissioned, and integrated with other existing operational tunnels.
