Final Programme
Dear Delegates,
Thank you for your participation at the MPT2023 conference in Nice. The feedback we have received so far has been heartening, not only for the technical quality of the presentations but also for the warm and friendly atmosphere of all the delegates to which we thank you dearly.
I extend our thanks to our sponsors SLB, ESSS, Kongsberg and Wood for their invaluable contribution and support, their sponsorship plays an integral part in launching the conference and making it viable.
Many thanks to our speaker Dr. Zhilin Yang for the special keynote on CO2 Transport.  I would also like to thank all of the presenters for sharing their work and experiences with the conference audience.  The high quality of the presentations is to be commended; it is clearly a reflection of the skills and expertise within the Multiphase industry.
This event series is fortunate to be guided by an active and experienced Technical Advisory Committee.  We feel this is reflected in the quality and success of the events.  BIG thanks to the whole Committee for making this event a success!
Congratulations to Bruce Norris and co-authors for being awarded the Best Paper titled, ‘Integrated Experiments and Modelling for Hydrate formation Management in Gas Condensate Systems via Novel Composite Materials’.
I would like to pay a special tribute to the efforts of our Conference Chairman, Ian Kopperman. Thank you so much for everything you have done to make this conference a success and we are looking forward to what the future of the Mulitphase series has in store.
Adam and I hope you enjoyed the conference; It was a great honour for us to bring together the Multiphase Community after so long and we thank you all and hope to see you in Banff next year.
Kindest regards,
Ally

‘Delivering value through novel application’
As the world’s leading organiser of specialist conferences, this series of international events began in Europe in 1983.
We are now approaching the 20th MPT conference.  With an international reputation as a strong technical event presenting peer-reviewed papers of the highest quality, the conference has long been regarded as the premier event in the field and an essential diary date for all engineers concerned with any aspect of multiphase technology.
Conference Outline
Pressures on Energy companies demand greater understanding of flow assurance, multiphase flow production chemistry and the associated data management and environmental impact, whilst in-house expertise cannot necessarily cover all successful innovative developments. The networking that the conference provides is a key added benefit to the presentations. At earlier conferences, delegates’ feedback told us that networking with the “gurus” had saved them precious months in solving project problems and we anticipate this will be replicated in 2023.
Production solutions have enabled the oil & gas industry to improve its production performance, extend its operations and enter progressively more technically challenging areas. The lessons learned, the modelling techniques developed and the practical experiences of its users are of value to engineers in a range of industries, whilst considering how we apply the lessons learned and available technologies to support the energy transition.
The World’s industry experts will convene at MPT 2023 to share the latest developments and provide delegates with opportunities to discuss new research and developments, to consider innovative solutions and to explore technology transfer between industries.
Who should attend?
The conference will benefit anyone engaged in the application, development and research of multiphase technology for the oil and gas industry. Applications in the oil and gas industry will also be of interest to engineers from other industries for which multiphase technology offers a novel solution to their problems.
The conference will also be of particular value to designers, facilities and operations engineers, consultants and researchers from operating, contracting, consultancy and technology organisations.

Chairman’s Foreword
Ian Kopperman, Senior Business Manager, Strategic Partnerships, Wood PLC
This is not only the 20th in the series of Multiphase Conferences, but also the return of the conference following the enforced COVID break, and the Conference’s 40th Anniversary, an event certainly worth celebrating. The longevity of the conference is a testament to the fact that the attendees represent the pinnacle of innovation and collaboration in the field of multiphase technology and beyond, which brings together experts and enthusiasts from around the world.
Before we delve into the rich content of this conference, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to our previous chairman, Alex Hunt, who unfortunately cannot be with us in Nice. Since 2005 Alex oversaw the conference and its proceedings, through both prosperous and turbulent periods in the industry. Under his exceptional leadership, the conference flourished and achieved remarkable success. His dedication, vision, and unwavering commitment have left an indelible mark on this community, and we all owe a debt of gratitude to Alex for his invaluable contributions.
Last time round we opened the conference content to include flow assurance and digitalisation to ensure the conference remains relevant amongst the changing landscape of the energy industry. As we navigate the evolution of technology in the industry, it is essential for this conference to recognize the importance of digitalization and energy transition in shaping the future. Even in Alex’s 2005 Foreword he mentions the reduction in prices and increasing processing power of IBM technology emphasising the importance of harnessing this, and the digital evolution is moving faster today. The emergence of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation is unleashing unprecedented potential to revolutionise the energy industry and we would be reticent to not include this in the conference proceedings now and in the future.
In addition to technological advances, the imperative to address the challenges of energy transition, and the coincident energy crisis, has become increasingly evident. The global drive towards a more sustainable future demands that we embrace cleaner and more efficient energy sources. This transition inevitably influences this conference and the associated content, compelling us to explore innovative solutions that can optimise energy production, storage, and utilization while minimizing environmental impacts.
This year we will be asking for your input into the potential path forward for this conference to remain relevant. This way, future proceedings can incorporate advancements in multiphase flow and flow assurance, but also aim to expand the frontiers of the legacy conference boundaries by embracing the digital revolution and the energy transition.
I encourage you all to be active participants in the conference, to ask questions, engage speakers, and drive the path forward for this remarkable event. Over the years even I have made a friend or two!
I extend my appreciation and thanks to all the authors, presenters, and contributors who have made this conference possible. Your dedication, expertise, and passion are the driving force behind the success of this event. I am confident that the insights shared here will inspire and guide future advancements in multiphase technology, digitalisation, and the energy transition.
I would also like to express my gratefulness to the Technical Advisory Committee, both UK and international, who have made a significant contribution by reviewing abstracts, identifying suitable referees, and helping to organise the conference programme. Staging a conference such as this is a team effort, and your input has been invaluable.
I must also add a special thanks to Ally Jackson and ISAVFT who have continued to support this conference through COVID adversity, and the changes enforced by BHR Group. Without Ally we would not be here. Thanks to all the conference sponsors and exhibitors, including Wood plc, SLB, ESSS O&G & Kongsberg.
Finally welcome to Nice and thank you for making the time to attend. With the progression of the conference in mind I would like to point out that this foreword was written with the support and assistance of ChatGPT, highlighting the need for us to move forward with technology and the energy transition or risk getting left behind.
Enjoy the conference.
